Hamburg has a great deal to offer: an attractive world of shopping in unique and internationally renowned stores, a wide range of cultural activities typical of a vibrant global metropolis, and innovative, multifaceted cuisine in a large number of Michelin-starred restaurants.
Musical, Theater and more
Culture from Hamburg hits the right notes – and they ring out far and wide. The North German city has a longstanding reputation as a leading centre for dance, music and theatre, with only New York and London beating it to the position of the world’s most successful city of musical theatre. It is not just the city’s many thrilling musical productions that are making waves, the Hamburg State Opera, Laeiszhalle, Thalia Theatre and Deutsches Schauspielhaus theatre also offer outstanding cultural experiences.
Hamburg is pioneering new musical paths. Visible evidence comes in the form of the concert hall Elbphilharmonie – a cultural landmark for the city and a beacon for the world. Architecturally and acoustically brilliant, the venue will host top international performers from the worlds of classical, jazz, pop and world music. In addition to these world-class offerings for the ear, the treasures and exhibitions of the Metropolitan Region’s over 300 museums have plenty to delight and fascinate the eye.
Shopping
For many people the hunt for beautiful things is a real passion– and Hamburg’s fantastic shops give them the chance to indulge that passion to the full. From traditional department stores, glittering glass arcades and fine boutiques to designer stores, specialist retailers and a plethora of flea and antiques markets, there is something here for all tastes, requirements and wallets.
Each of Hamburg’s ten shopping centres offers a special retail experience. The Europa Passage is the largest citycentre mall and exudes cosmopolitan flair across five floors. Hamburg’s oldest arcade is the smaller Mellin Passage, which entices shoppers with its exclusive shops and wonderful art nouveau murals. Those looking for something more unusual should look no further than the Schanze and Karo districts, which are packed with trendy accessories, creative fashion and unique self-made items.
Parks
Healthy air, plenty of space and lush green expanses: What more could you want – and which other metropolis offers such a high standard of living? A number of large parks such as the Stadtpark, Jenischpark and Planten un Blomen park are an invitation to have a barbecue, jog or simply relax and do nothing … Lüneburg Heath and the Altes Land area are close by and a great excuse for a family outing.
Ideal for the sophisticated or unconventional, families or singles, urbanites or countryside dwellers … Hamburg and the Metropolitan Region offer happiness in all shapes and sizes! Elegant residential areas mingle with dynamic, creative districts, the two worlds often only separated by a few stops on the underground. Local public transport renders car travel within the city superfluous – a further contribution to the high quality of life in the city.
Scene
An exciting, authentic music and club culture comparable to that of the legendary Star Club and the seminal club scene of the 1960s has returned to the famous Reeperbahn – Hamburg’s number one night-time destination. The newcomers who try their luck here are following in the footsteps of a band you may have heard of: The Beatles.
The art of creative partying is cherished, and can be witnessed at the Reeperbahn, Elbjazz and Dockville festivals, in the cafés and trendy bars of the St. Georg and Schanze districts and at the city’s popular beach clubs.
Traditional Events
Traditional festivals and events adorn the Hamburg year like a string of pearls. For three days each May, the city is filled with maritime fl air and regional tradition as it celebrates the birthday of its port. Held every two years, Hamburg Cruise Days brings an exclusive cruise atmosphere to the city and gives visitors the chance to see the world’s largest cruise liners at close hand. The annual Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival is a romantic highlight, and closes with a magical fi rework display over the Outer Alster Lake.
Whether in its spring, summer or autumn season, the DOM – Northern Germany’s largest funfair – is a magnet for children of all ages. The Alstervergnügen weekend is an extremely popular summer event, and also takes place in the winter if the ice on the Alster lakes is thick enough. Add a range of top sporting events such as the Hamburg Marathon, Hamburg Triathlon and Hamburg Cyclassics and the message is clear: In Hamburg the party never stops!
